Elden Ring Film Director Reassures Fans, Have Beaten Game Six Times

Elden Ring movie director Alex Garland revealed that he has completed the video game at least six times.

Whenever a beloved video game is being adapted into a live-action film, it’s only natural for fans to feel a sense of unease. History has shown time and again that adaptations can fall into the hands of filmmakers who lack a deep understanding of the source material. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be the case with the upcoming Elden Ring film.

In case you missed the major announcement a while back, Bandai Namco has officially confirmed a live-action film adaptation of Elden Ring, which is being produced in collaboration with acclaimed production studio A24. What makes this project even more exciting is that it will be directed by none other than Alex Garland, a seasoned filmmaker known for his critically acclaimed works, including Ex Machina and Annihilation.

For fans concerned about whether Garland truly understands the Elden Ring universe, fear not. In a recent interview with IGN, Garland revealed that he is not only familiar with the game, but has finished it at least six times. He also mentioned that he is currently on his seventh playthrough, though he did not specify whether each run was a new journey or part of a New Game Plus progression.

During the same interview, Garland described Malenia as the toughest boss he has encountered in the game, stating that while other major foes like Radahn posed a challenge, they were far more manageable by comparison. However, he did not confirm whether he has played the newly released Elden Ring expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree.

The live-action Elden Ring movie currently lacks a release window, but it has been confirmed that FromSoftware, the studio behind the original game, will be directly involved in the project. With a passionate and well-versed director at the helm, hopes are high that this adaptation may finally break the curse of disappointing video game movies.
