Suikoden: The Anime Second Trailer Highlights Riliu and Jowy

Konami has released the second trailer for Suikoden: The Anime, giving fans a fresh look at its upcoming adaptation of Suikoden II.

The new promotional video arrived around Anime Expo and focuses heavily on Riliu and Jowy, the two childhood friends at the centre of the story. Fans of the original RPG will recognise the emotional weight behind that relationship immediately, especially given how strongly Suikoden II is remembered for its war drama, political tension, and painful personal choices.

Rather than selling the anime solely on nostalgia, the trailer offers a clearer sense of how Konami is approaching the adaptation. The footage leans into expressive character animation, sharp action cuts, and a more cinematic presentation than some fans may have expected when the project was first announced.

Konami Animation Adapts Suikoden II’s War Story

Suikoden: The Anime adapts Suikoden II, one of Konami’s most beloved RPGs and a long-time favourite among classic PlayStation fans. The story follows Riliu and Jowy, two members of the Unicorn Youth Brigade from the Highland Kingdom. Both boys believe their normal lives will return once the fighting ends, only to be pulled deeper into war, fate, and the power behind the 108 Stars of Destiny.

That setup gives the anime plenty to work with. Suikoden II was never just about adventure. Its reputation comes from how it blends friendship, betrayal, political conflict, and the cost of war into a larger ensemble story.

amazarashi Performs the Opening Theme Song

The trailer also previews the anime’s opening theme, Kanashimi Sae Otonobite, performed by amazarashi. It is a fitting choice for Suikoden: The Anime. The band’s melancholic tone matches the series’ focus on sacrifice, loss, and people trying to hold on to their beliefs while larger conflicts tear the world apart.

The new trailer also confirms more of the wider cast, including major characters such as Riliu, Jowy, Nanami, Viktor, Flik, Luca Blight, Jillia Blight, Agares Blight, Anabelle, Jess, and several others. That growing roster matters because the original game’s identity is built around its large ensemble, even if the anime will naturally need to focus its story more tightly.

October Premiere Planned in Japan

Suikoden: The Anime is currently planned to premiere in Japan this October. The first episode is expected to launch as a special extended 60-minute premiere, giving the adaptation more room to establish Riliu, Jowy, the Highland Kingdom, and the early tension that drives the story forward.

The first three episodes are also planned for advance screenings in selected Japanese theatres from August 21. At the time of writing, a global streaming window has not been confirmed.

Suikoden’s Revival Keeps Growing

The anime arrives during an unexpectedly active period for Suikoden. Konami has already brought the early games back through Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, while Suikoden: Star Leap is also in development for mobile and PC. Adding an anime adaptation to that wider push makes the franchise feel more visible than it has in years.

For long-time fans, the second trailer is another encouraging sign that Konami is treating Suikoden as more than a dormant legacy property. The real test will be whether Suikoden: The Anime can capture the heart of Suikoden II without losing the scale, tragedy, and character bonds that made the original so memorable.
