Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Delay Pushes Launch Back By Three Weeks

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game will arrive a little later than planned, with Gameplay Group and PM Studios confirming that the licensed 2D fighter has been delayed to July 23.

The game was previously scheduled to launch on July 2, but the team says it is taking additional time to improve the final release and add content that was not originally planned. For fans who have been following the project closely, the delay is not a major one, but it does push the game into a busier fighting-game window.

That makes the timing interesting. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has been building attention through its hand-drawn 2D animation, rollback netcode, crossplay, and broad Avatar roster, but it now launches less than two weeks before competitor Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls arrives on PlayStation 5 and PC.

Crossplay Beta Will Fill The Original Launch Window

To help soften the delay, Gameplay Group and PM Studios have announced a crossplay-supported beta for players who pre-order Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. The beta will run from July 2 to July 5, using the dates originally scheduled for the full launch. It will be available to pre-order players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

That beta could be useful for more than simple goodwill. For a fighting game, online feel matters enormously, and Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game needs to get rollback netcode and crossplay right as key parts of its competitive pitch. Testing those systems across platforms before release should help the team identify issues before the July 23 launch.

Timing Creates A New Challenge

While a three-week delay is not dramatic on paper, the new date does create a tougher calendar. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game now launches on July 23, while Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is scheduled for August 6. The two games are not identical in audience or structure, but they are still competing for attention within the broader fighting game community.

The Avatar universe, lower barrier to entry, and cross-platform release could still help it find a different audience. The concern is momentum, as fighting games generally benefit from strong launch windows, active online communities, and early tournament interest, so every week of attention matters.

The game will feature 12 playable characters at launch, hand drawn 2D animation inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, online play with rollback netcode and crossplay, offline modes, and multiple single player options.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is now scheduled to launch on July 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
