Final Fantasy XIV Mobile Shutdown Confirmed for China

Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will end service in mainland China on September 30, bringing the mobile adaptation of Square Enix’s MMORPG to an early close.

The game, known in China as Final Fantasy XIV: Crystal World, launched in June 2025 through Tencent’s LightSpeed Studios. That means its Chinese service will end after just over a year, far earlier than many expected for a mobile version of one of Square Enix’s most successful live-service franchises.

According to the shutdown notice, Tencent and Square Enix have agreed to terminate the mobile game’s licensing agreement following operational adjustments and changes in the market environment.

Top-Ups and New Registrations Have Already Ended

The shutdown process for Final Fantasy XIV Mobile has already begun. Top-ups and new user registrations ended on July 17 at 6 PM China Standard Time. Game operations will officially cease on September 30 at 11 AM, when servers and the official website will close, and players will no longer be able to log in.

Forums and dedicated customer support are scheduled to close on October 15. The operations team also says account data and character information will be deleted after the servers shut down, except where otherwise required by law or existing user agreements.

A compensation event is planned from July 20 to September 19, with details to be shared through the official website and mini-program posts.

Global Version Has Reportedly Been Cancelled

The shutdown is more significant because Final Fantasy XIV Mobile was not originally meant to remain limited to China. When Square Enix first revealed the project, it described the mobile title as an official Final Fantasy XIV adaptation developed by LightSpeed Studios under Square Enix supervision. The plan was to test in several regions, launch first in mainland China, make adjustments based on feedback, and then release globally.

That wider plan now appears to be over. RPG Site reports that the global version has been cancelled, citing the shutdown announcement’s apology to players who had been waiting for an international release.

If that holds, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will not get the chance to become the broader global mobile gateway to Eorzea that Square Enix initially appeared to be building.

A Major Mobile Setback for Square Enix

The news adds another high-profile mobile setback for Square Enix. The company recently confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis will also end service this October, creating an uncomfortable pattern around mobile projects based on major Final Fantasy brands. Both games had strong franchise recognition, but that alone was not enough to secure long-term momentum.

That does not mean the core Final Fantasy XIV MMO is in trouble. The PC and console versions remain separate products with their own global service, content roadmap, and established community. Still, the mobile shutdown is a reminder that adapting a major live-service RPG into a separate mobile experience is not simple.

Eorzea’s Mobile Experiment Ends Early

Final Fantasy XIV Mobile was an ambitious idea on paper. It aimed to bring Eorzea to mobile while preserving familiar story content, social systems, and the spirit of Square Enix’s MMORPG in a more accessible format. The Chinese version also tested how much of that experience could be rebuilt for shorter mobile sessions.

Unfortunately, the experiment is now ending early. For players outside China, the bigger disappointment is that the global release may never arrive. For Square Enix, it is another sign that mobile live-service success is no longer guaranteed, even when attached to one of gaming’s most recognisable RPG names.
