After an intriguing reveal and subsequent deep dive into its forging system, MercurySteam and 505 Games‘ Blades of Fire is now giving players a look at its combat system, and there’s much to learn. With multi-directional attacks, defensive measures, and a stamina bar to manage, players will have to master these systems to continue on this adventure.
Blades of Fire features a unique and challenging combat system which allows you to attack specific body parts of the enemy. Each face button corresponds to a specific direction, and holding down the button will initiate a heavy attack. Combos and the right weapons will be key to overcoming certain enemies, especially those donning armour.
When it comes to playing defence, players can parry, defend, or dodge. Naturally, if you are the type who wants to punish enemies for even daring to attack you, executing perfect parries will leave foes reeling and open to damaging heavy attacks. At the same time, you will benefit from unlimited stamina for a limited time to keep pushing aggressively. When facing crowds, this is your best bet at coming out alive.
Dodging is also an option when enemies use heavy attacks of their own, and holding your weapon to defend will keep you safe as long as your weapon holds out. The latter way is a great way to recover stamina quickly, as hero Aran de Lira can use the Breath of the Defender technique to fill up the gauge.
However, every attack blocked by your weapon gradually dulls its effectiveness and reduces its durability. Out in the wild, you can sharpen your arms using the sharpening stone to restore its edge at the cost of overall durability. The only way to get back to full durability will be via anvils, but each weapon can only be repaired fully a set number of times, determined by the forging stars earned during the creation process.
Only by learning and getting to grips with all these systems will you be prepared to take down the evil Queen Nerea when Blades of Fire releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on May 22.
