Nintendo Sues Accessory Maker Genki Over Switch 2 Mockups

Genki is Ready to Respond to the Lawsuit Filed by Nintendo Regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 Mockup.

Even before it was officially revealed to the public, the Nintendo Switch 2 generated plenty of interest and speculation. Most reports were fairly accurate, illustrating a more powerful successor while retaining a similar hybrid concept. Based on these early predictions, accessory manufacturers gambled by revealing products tailored for the yet-unannounced device, and Genki is one of them.

A well-known accessory manufacturer, the company is now finding itself in hot water after creating and showcasing a mockup of the Nintendo Switch 2 for both media and consumers long before Nintendo had confirmed the console’s existence. Unsurprisingly, the gaming giant has initiated legal proceedings.

The main flashpoint was at CES in January 2025, when Nintendo’s legal representative reportedly visited Genki’s booth. The company behind iconic franchises like Mario and Zelda has officially sent a cease-and-desist letter, swiftly followed by a lawsuit suing Genki over the creation and public display of the unofficial Switch 2 mockup.

In the lawsuit, Nintendo accuses Genki of at least five major violations, including trademark infringement, false advertising, and engaging in unfair competition. One of the central issues is Genki’s use of Nintendo’s name in their promotional materials, which the company argues could mislead consumers into believing the products were officially licensed or endorsed.

As part of the legal demands, Nintendo is asking the manufacturer to immediately cease the sale of all products bearing Nintendo’s trademarks and to provide undisclosed financial compensation. Genki, however, has responded with a defiant stance.

In a statement on Twitter/X, the company confirmed it is working closely with legal counsel to prepare an appropriate response. Genki assured customers it will continue business as usual and confirmed its attendance at the upcoming PAX East event, where it plans to meet fans and showcase new products.

While Genki is not the only company to have developed and marketed accessories for the rumored Switch 2 ahead of its announcement, creating a physical mockup appears to have crossed a line, at least in Nintendo’s view.
