Persona 1 Remake Gameplay Appears to Leak Online

After Persona 3 Reload and with Persona 4 Revival now approaching, attention may already be shifting towards where Atlus could take its remake strategy next. Nearly two minutes of alleged work-in-progress footage from an unannounced remake of the original Persona surfaced online over the weekend, showing dungeon exploration, combat and story scenes rebuilt with a presentation much closer to the series’ modern entries.

The original video was uploaded to YouTube under the name P1REMAKE, before quickly spreading through Reddit and other social platforms. Atlus and SEGA have not confirmed that a remake is in development, however, and the authenticity of the footage has not been independently verified. Gematsu reports that the clip resembles the kind of internal showreel that previously leaked ahead of Persona 3 Reload.

Modern Combat and Unreal Engine Details Give the Leak Some Weight

Much of the footage points towards a substantial visual overhaul rather than a straightforward remaster of the 1996 PlayStation RPG. Combat uses a modernised interface and more dynamic camera work reminiscent of P5 and P3 Reload, while Unreal Engine debug information can seemingly be seen in the upper-left corner during battle sequences. Atlus also used Unreal Engine 4 to develop P3 Reload.

Another interesting detail comes from Eriko Kirishima’s summoning animation, which observers have noted appears to match an animation used by Yukiko Amagi in the upcoming P4 Revival. That overlap lends the footage some additional credibility, although reused development assets could equally point towards an internal prototype rather than a representation of a finished game.

Story sequences also appear to use illustrated panels with something closer to a graphic-novel presentation, giving the original game’s darker atmosphere a different visual identity from Atlus’ more recent remakes.

Tatsuya Suou Creates the Leak’s Biggest Question

The stranger detail is standing right in the party. Tatsuya Suou, protagonist of Persona 2: Innocent Sin, appears during the combat footage despite not being part of the original game. Meanwhile, the first game’s protagonist is identified as Boy with Earring, the name later used for him in P2: Eternal Punishment.

Tatsuya’s presence has inevitably fuelled theories that Atlus could somehow be connecting remakes of the earliest games, but there is currently nothing substantial supporting that conclusion. He could simply be a placeholder model used during development or part of a demonstration build assembled from existing assets.

It is therefore worth treating any suggestion of simultaneous development or a combined remake project as speculation for now.

Atlus Has Already Talked About Revisiting The Originals

What makes the leak particularly timely is that series producer Kazuhisa Wada has repeatedly discussed bringing the earliest games forward. Wada recently described remakes and remasters as a form of “cultural preservation”, adding that the first two are games ATLUS will “probably eventually” revisit. In an earlier interview, he similarly said remaking them was something he personally believed the studio “should definitely do”, while stopping short of confirming either project.

For now, Atlus’ confirmed remake remains P4 Revival, which launches February 18, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, followed by Nintendo Switch 2 on May 20. Its modern overhaul also includes new animated cutscenes produced by MAPPA, giving the studio another opportunity to establish how it intends to bring older games forward.

Whether this mysterious footage represents the next step in that strategy remains unconfirmed, but between Wada openly discussing the series’ earliest entries and a surprisingly elaborate development reel now circulating online, the Boy with Earring suddenly feels considerably less forgotten.
