Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow Brings Stealth and Shadows to VR This December
Vertigo Games has officially announced that Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, the virtual reality reimagining of the iconic stealth franchise, will release on December 4 for PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest, and Steam VR.
Developed in collaboration with Maze Theory and Eidos-Montréal, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow brings the franchise’s atmospheric stealth gameplay into full virtual reality for the first time — complete with tactile interactions, immersive environments, and dynamic player freedom.
A Fresh Look at Classic Stealth
To coincide with the announcement, Vertigo Games revealed two new gameplay showcases highlighting how players can use VR to experience the stealth fantasy like never before.
The Meta Quest gameplay trailer shows off realistic body movement and object interaction, allowing players to physically crouch, lean, and grab as they navigate through dimly lit corridors and rooftop skylines.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation VR2 gameplay trailer emphasises the game’s fluid archery mechanics and lighting effects, showcasing the deep immersion that comes from sneaking through The City — the series’ steampunk-inspired world.
A New Protagonist, A Familiar World
Players step into the boots of Magpie, a streetwise thief surviving under the oppressive rule of Baron Ulysses Northcrest. When a heist uncovers a mysterious artifact tied to the city’s forgotten past, Magpie’s personal struggle becomes a larger fight for freedom and legacy.
Built for VR, Legacy of Shadow makes full use of motion controls and haptic feedback. Players will:
- Pickpocket and loot using intuitive hand tracking
- Pick locks and disarm traps through physical gestures
- Fire arrows and tools using immersive VR archery mechanics
- Climb rooftops, scale walls, and traverse shadows freely
Each mission offers multiple paths and playstyles, encouraging players to decide whether to remain unseen or strike from the darkness.
