Krypto to Take Flight in James Gunn's Superman

Comic books and superheroes continue to be a great source of inspiration for entertainment mediums, and for those eagerly anticipating the James Gunn take on the DC universe, there are new developments for the upcoming Superman film. The writer/director has now confirmed that Krypto the superdog will be part of the adventure.

Gunn shares that this version of Krypto has been inspired by his own dog, Ozu, which was adopted by him and his wife, Jennifer Holland, just after writing on Superman began. The canine “came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least.”

“He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop,” Gunn explained. “It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.”

Whether Krypto will do the same for Clark Kent will be something interesting to watch out for when the film releases on July 11 2025. After all, the pup has been a big part of the Superman lore since making his first appearance in 1955 on the pages of Adventure Comics #210. But other than appearing in animated form, Krypto has yet to make his big-screen debut in a live-action film. That will all change next year.
