Sony Cancels Live Service Projects, Including a God of War Spinoff

God of War Live-service

Sony‘s ambition to rake in big money from live service games is clearly a key business directive for the company. However, so far, only Helldivers 2 has proven successful. This has predictably raised concerns about its studios’ focus on live service projects that could harm Sony’s reputation as a creator of fantastic narrative-driven games. Now, there is even more to discuss, as it has been revealed that Sony has cancelled two more such projects, including a God of War spinoff.

As reported by Bloomberg, one of the biggest Sony franchises was being considered to enter the live service arena, with Bluepoint Games, the developer behind the Shadow of the Colossus remake, handling the reins. However, not everything seemed to go according to plan, with Sony eventually cancelling the entire God of War side project.

Not only that, but there was also another mysterious project that was being headed up by Bend Studio, the team behind Days Gone. Both titles did not survive the internal review process at Sony, but will that affect the overall direction of the business? It seems unlikely that the gaming giant will give up on this pursuit of live service projects, even as the strength of its narrative-focused experiences continues to be prominent.

Thankfully, both studios are not affected in terms of personnel when it comes to the cancellations. Sony remains committed to ensuring that both Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio stay operational and active. The company is currently in close negotiations about what new projects the two studios will work on next.
