Mafia: the Old Country Arrives This August As Linear Cinematic Drama

The Mafia series by 2K Games has always stood out in the crowded open-world genre, thanks to its near-perfect execution of historical periods. Paired with engaging stories and memorable characters, the franchise carved its own space in the gaming industry. It’s no wonder that fans have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Mafia: The Old Country. However, expectations will need to be tweaked accordingly.

After the initial teaser trailer that showcased very little gameplay, 2K Games and Hangar 13 have finally pulled back the curtain with an official release date and more details. Unlike its predecessors, The Old Country is confirmed to be a linear single-player experience.

Promising a high-quality narrative, innovative gameplay mechanics, and an authentic, historically accurate setting, the game shifts away from its traditional open-world roots. Instead, players can expect a more cinematic experience reminiscent of Uncharted, complete with horseback riding and vehicle sections that are tightly scripted.

“We think there’s a large audience for compelling stories that don’t require massive time commitments,” 2K president David Ismailer said via a press release. “We’re excited to offer a game like Mafia: The Old Country in our portfolio, and to provide a linear highly-polished narrative experience that can easily complement the other more persistent games our players also love and engage with on a more consistent basis.”

Set in early 1900s Sicily, the gameplay footage showcased a range of intense actions that can be performed by the main protagonist, Enzo Favara. Whether it’s executing stealth kills or engaging in full-blown gunfights, Enzo appears to be as deadly as he is strategic.

Interestingly, the decision to opt for a more focused, smaller-scale world also impacts its pricing. Unlike many modern AAA titles with standardised prices at US$70, Mafia: The Old Country will launch at a more affordable $50. PC specifications reflect this streamlined experience, with lower storage requirements than typical contemporary releases.

Mafia: The Old Country is set to launch on August 8, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Fans of the series can now look forward to exploring Sicily’s dangerous underworld through a new lens, one that trades vast open cities for tight, story-driven action.
