Sony's New Resident Evil Reboot Set for September 2026 Debut

We already know that a Resident Evil reboot is in the works for the big screen, with Barbarian director Zach Cregger taking the reins, but now, there is a locked release date. This latest Resident Evil movie will hit the theatres on September 18, 2026, and is set to be more in line with the games than previous efforts.

With Sony Pictures once again part of the process, the hope is that this new venture will be different from what came before. The original Resident Evil film series was led by Paul W.S. Anderson and starred Milla Jovovich. While those films enjoyed commercial success, they strayed significantly from the source material, leaving longtime fans of the game series divided.

Having Cregger in charge is seemingly a step in the right direction, as he has expressed his enthusiasm for the project previously.  “I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor,” he said in an interview with Deadline. Hopefully, that means more horror than pure action to attract the audience.

As a reboot, there is plenty of source material to draw inspiration from. For starters, we could return to the Spencer Mansion where it all began, with the likes of Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Albert Wesker, and good old Barry Burton being part of the fun. The claustrophobic setting will be in line with what was delivered in Barbarian as well.

Having overseen a revival of the video game franchise in the eyes of longtime fans, Capcom will likely want to see the same kind of success on the movie front. Together with Sony Pictures, Constantin Film, PlayStation Productions, and Cregger, perhaps that will happen after all without the kind of ridicule the other movies have gotten.

As of now, there are no official details regarding the cast or storyline. The new Resident Evil reboot is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
