Stellar Blade: Blood Rain Puts Evie at the Centre of the Sequel
Following the success of Stellar Blade, Shift Up officially unveiled its sequel, Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, during Summer Game Fest. The reveal immediately became one of the showcase season’s biggest talking points. The trailer introduced a denser futuristic city, more aggressive action, and a new protagonist named Evie, signalling a different direction from Eve’s journey in the original game.
However, the discussion around Evie quickly moved beyond gameplay. Shortly after the trailer debuted, some players raised concerns over whether her youthful design clashed with the series’ established visual style. Others felt the reaction was overstated, especially since the game was still early in development.
Kim Hyung-Tae Responds to Evie Discussion
Shift Up CEO and Stellar Blade creator Kim Hyung-Tae has now addressed the growing debate around Evie. In an interview with IGN, rather than presenting Evie purely through her visual design, Kim suggested that players will better understand her once they see more of Stellar Blade: Blood Rain in context.
According to him, the team wants Evie to stand out through her personality, dialogue, combat style, and role in the story. That is a notable shift from some of the criticism aimed at the first Stellar Blade.
While Eve became one of the game’s most recognisable elements, the original also faced criticism from players who felt her characterisation could have gone further. With Evie, Shift Up appears to place greater emphasis on giving the protagonist a stronger identity.
Evie Brings a Different Combat Style
Stellar Blade: Blood Rain is not simply swapping one heroine for another. Early footage suggests that Evie fights differently from Eve, with more emphasis on close-quarters action and hand-to-hand combat rather than the sword-focused style of the original game. That alone could help the sequel feel distinct, especially if Shift Up builds encounters around her smaller frame, speed, and movement.
Kim has also described Evie as facing more dangerous situations than Eve did, with the sequel pitting her against a major threat in a large futuristic city. While many story details remain unclear, Shift Up seems to be presenting her as a capable lead rather than a simple visual contrast to the first game’s protagonist.
Blood Rain Is Designed to Stand Alone
Although Stellar Blade: Blood Rain continues from the original game, Shift Up has said the sequel is being designed so newcomers can follow the story. Returning players can expect connections to Stellar Blade, but the studio is not treating prior knowledge as a requirement.
That could prove important if Blood Rain launches across more platforms than the first game did at release, though Shift Up has not confirmed the final platform lineup yet. The sequel is also still in early development. Shift Up says it has made strong progress, but the studio is not ready to share a release window.

Shift Up Is Not Moving Away From Its Style
The debate around Evie also ties into a wider conversation about Stellar Blade’s identity. Kim has indicated that Shift Up is not planning to move away from the series’ bold costume direction, even as the team tries to make Evie feel more fully realised as a character. For some players, that confidence will be part of the appeal. For others, it will likely remain a point of contention until the game is shown in greater detail.
For now, Stellar Blade: Blood Rain has no confirmed release date or official platform list. What it does have is attention, and Shift Up now has the challenge of proving that Evie can carry the sequel beyond the debate surrounding her reveal.
