God of War Laufey Release Date Confirmed at SDCC
Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Laufey will launch on February 16, 2027 for PlayStation 5. The release date was revealed during the game’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Forging God of War’s Next Heroes, where Game Director Ariel Lawrence and Head of Creative Cory Barlog joined cast members Deborah Ann Woll, Chris Judge, Jack Quaid, and Perlina Lau for a closer look at the next chapter of the series.
The date also gives PlayStation one of its major early 2027 exclusives, while confirming that God of War Laufey will arrive well before Sony ends production of new physical PlayStation discs in January 2028. Santa Monica Studio had already confirmed that the game will be available on disc, but the February date now removes any lingering uncertainty.
Faye Takes the Lead in the Everywhen
God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight from Kratos to Faye, also known as Laufey the Just. Set after her funeral, the game follows Faye as she awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife of the gods where magic returns and gods from different mythologies struggle for power. Her plans to protect Kratos and Atreus are suddenly at risk, forcing her to fight her way through a world that may be as much prison as paradise.
The setup gives Santa Monica Studio a way to explore Faye beyond her legacy in God of War and God of War Ragnarök. Until now, much of her importance has been felt through memory, prophecy, and the impact she left behind. This game finally lets players see her as the warrior, leader, and flawed person she was.
Kratos’ Next Game Will Follow Laufey
The biggest long-term tease from the panel is not just the release date. At the panel, Barlog confirmed that the next Kratos-led God of War game will arrive after God of War Laufey and connect directly to its story. No title, release window, or gameplay details were shared.
That changes how fans should view Laufey. It is not simply a side story filling time before Kratos returns. It is being positioned as a bridge into what comes next for the franchise. Barlog reportedly described Laufey as a continuation of what came before and a way to prepare and expand what comes next. That makes Faye’s journey feel more central to the wider series than some players may have initially expected.
Combat Mixes Greek Speed With Norse Weight
Santa Monica Studio has previously described Faye’s combat as a blend of classic Greek-era fluidity and the heavier, more intimate feel of the Norse games. Faye can move between ground and air more freely, using speed, momentum, and offensive pressure to control fights. She also wields a legendary sword guarded by Rue, while her power as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar lets her manipulate souls in battle.

She will not travel alone either. Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, is a cosmic cube companion, while Rue, voiced by Perlina Lau, is an enchanted ribbon guardian tied to Faye’s weapon.
The February 16, 2027 date makes God of War Laufey feel much more immediate. It also reframes the game’s place in the series. Some fans initially treated Faye’s solo adventure as a surprising detour from Kratos, but the SDCC reveal suggests it is part of a deliberate long-term plan.
For now, Kratos is stepping back from the lead role, but he is not leaving the series behind.
