Champions Tactics Shutdown Brings Ubisoft’s Web3 Push to a Close

Ubisoft is shutting down Champions Tactics, bringing one of the publisher’s most visible blockchain gaming experiments to an end. According to the shutdown notice reported by PC Gamer, Champions Tactics servers will close on October 30. Until then, the game will remain playable for its remaining community, giving players a final few months before the multiplayer tactics title goes offline.

The decision comes after Ubisoft had already started moving the game away from blockchain features earlier this year. The official Champions Tactics site says the game would “progressively transition away from blockchain functionality” due to upcoming changes affecting the infrastructure behind its Web3 features.

From NFT Game to Reforged Relaunch

Champions Tactics originally launched worldwide in 2024 as Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, a dark fantasy PvP tactical RPG where players assembled squads of collectible Champions. Its biggest point of difference was also its most controversial one. The game was built around blockchain-based Champions, NFT collections, minting, trading, and marketplace activity, arriving after much of the wider NFT gaming boom had already faded.

Ubisoft later attempted to shift the project away from that identity. Champions Tactics Reforged launched on Steam in May 2025 as a free-to-play turn-based strategy game, with the store page describing tactical PvP battles, squad building, and thousands of Champions. However, Steam now lists the game as no longer available on the store.

Dropping Blockchain Was Not Enough

The removal of Web3 features appears to have been too late to change the game’s trajectory. Ubisoft removed the ability to mint and sell NFT characters after announcing the blockchain transition. Once that happened, the game’s defining technology hook was effectively gone, leaving Champions Tactics to compete as a more conventional online tactics game.

That is a difficult pivot for any live-service title. If a game launches with one audience in mind, then later strips out the feature that shaped its economy and public identity, it needs a much stronger core player base to survive.

The Steam response suggests that never happened. Champions Tactics Reforged currently shows a Mixed user review rating, with 46% positive reviews from 292 user reviews.

Another Reminder That NFT Games Struggled to Last

The shutdown lands as another sign of how far blockchain gaming has fallen from its peak hype cycle. A few years ago, major publishers and start-ups were openly exploring NFTs, digital ownership, and play-to-earn models as possible futures for gaming. Many players pushed back hard, arguing that these systems added speculation, friction, and monetisation pressure without making games better.

Ubisoft was one of the largest publishers willing to experiment publicly with the space. However, Champions Tactics now joins the growing list of Web3-focused gaming projects that either changed direction, faded quietly, or shut down entirely.

Servers Close in October

Champions Tactics will remain playable until October 30. Ubisoft has not provided a detailed public explanation for the shutdown beyond saying the decision was made after careful consideration. However, the sequence of events is difficult to ignore: an NFT-driven launch, a later blockchain rollback, a Steam relaunch, limited traction, and now a full end-of-service plan.

For Ubisoft, this may not mean the company is finished with every form of blockchain experiment forever. It does, however, make one thing clear: Champions Tactics did not become the long-term proof point that NFT gaming advocates once hoped for.
