Diablo V Launches in Spring 2029 With Sanctuary Already Lost
For most of the series, players have arrived just in time to prevent Sanctuary from falling completely into Hell’s hands. Blizzard Entertainment is removing that luxury in Diablo V. Revealed during BlizzCon 2026, the next mainline entry launches in spring 2029 and begins with Diablo already victorious.
Sanctuary’s heroes have fallen, the Lord of Terror rules from Westmarch, and the world players once fought to save has been reshaped into his kingdom. This is a significant shift in perspective after Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred brought the previous saga to a close, and Blizzard used its Forging the Next Era panel to reveal much more about how that defeat changes the game itself.
Diablo Is No Longer Waiting at the End
Players take on the role of the Heir to Westmarch in Diablo V, fleeing through the remains of a kingdom that Diablo has transformed into an outpost of Hell. The protagonist also possesses an unexplained connection to Diablo, making them both dangerous to the Lord of Terror and particularly susceptible to his influence.
More importantly, Diablo will not simply loom over the story until a climactic confrontation. Blizzard says his presence actively shapes the narrative and the world from the beginning, with the Western Continent sitting directly under his control.

That world is unstable too. Terrain, points of interest, enemies and rewards can change when players return to previously visited locations, suggesting a more dynamic structure for exploration.
Your Caravan Replaces the Traditional Home Base
With cities and strongholds largely destroyed, players will instead build a caravan of survivors that travels alongside them. Those companions effectively replace the familiar town hub, providing services while carrying their own stories and relationships.
Among the early examples are a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and, somehow, a stranded Treasure Goblin. The idea gives Diablo V a markedly different rhythm. Rather than repeatedly returning to a permanent safe haven, the road itself becomes home as the caravan grows alongside the player.
Demon Hunter, Monk and Plague Knight Are the First Classes
Blizzard also confirmed the first three playable classes. The Demon Hunter and Monk return from earlier entries, while the Plague Knight makes its series debut. Details on the new class remain limited, but Blizzard describes these three as only the beginning, with more classes planned as development progresses towards 2029.
That comes as Diablo IV continues to expand, with the Amazon already confirmed for 2027 following the Paladin and Warlock introduced through Lord of Hatred.
Diablo II Inspires the New Loot System

Blizzard is also looking backwards for some of Diablo V‘s itemisation. Gear will once again carry stat requirements, while larger equipment physically occupies more inventory space. Runes and runewords return alongside gear sets, with Blizzard aiming to make individual drops easier to understand and more memorable.
It is a deliberate nod towards Diablo II, where finding the right base item or rune could matter as much as chasing increasingly larger numbers. Diablo V is still early in development, with Blizzard planning regular updates beginning in 2027 covering its systems, classes and wider design philosophy.
No platforms have been announced yet. Three years is a long wait, but Blizzard has already established the most important difference: this time, Sanctuary does not need saving from Diablo, it needs surviving.
