Granblue Fantasy: Relink worked because it understood one simple thing: players wanted combat that felt immediate, builds that kept growing, and bosses worth fighting long after the credits rolled. With Endless Ragnarok, Cygames does not appear interested in reinventing that foundation. Instead, it seems focused on making the loop bigger, smoother, and more rewarding for players who were already invested.

We recently had the opportunity to go hands-on with an early preview build of the expansion, while also interviewing Granblue Fantasy: Relink director Tetsuya Fukuhara and general director Sanshiro Hidaka. Across both the gameplay session and developer insights, one thing quickly became clear: Endless Ragnarok is shaping up to be far more substantial than a typical DLC release.

That distinction matters. According to the developers, Endless Ragnarok was created in response to strong community demand and is expected to deliver roughly 1.5 times as much content as the original game, while potentially doubling overall playtime. Although our preview session lasted around two hours and did not delve deeply into the story, it was immediately clear that the expansion is designed to strengthen the parts of Relink that players spent the most time with.

One of the biggest additions is the new Backup Character system, which essentially allows players to borrow powerful online characters from other users. For newcomers, this should make catching up much easier, especially when pushing through the base game and preparing for higher difficulties like Proud. For a game that could previously demand a heavy grind before players reached its toughest content, that smoother path forward feels like a smart addition.

The Conflux Makes the Grind Smarter

Another major addition comes through The Conflux, a new mode that brings roguelike-inspired elements into Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Players enter chains of randomised challenges, ranging from boss fights and survival encounters to puzzle-focused stages and area-clearing objectives. On paper, that already sounds like a useful way to add variety. In practice, the more important benefit may be how much it improves material farming.

Instead of repeatedly grinding the same bosses for rare upgrade resources, players can now obtain many of those materials more consistently through Conflux runs. That immediately makes character progression feel less repetitive. It does not remove the end-game grind, but it gives the grind a better shape.

That matters because Relink has always been at its best when the chase for stronger builds is supported by satisfying combat. The Conflux looks like an attempt to make that chase feel more flexible, less predictable, and more respectful of the player’s time.

New Characters and Bosses Expand the Raid Fantasy

Of course, no major Granblue Fantasy expansion would feel complete without new playable characters. Endless Ragnarok adds at least six newcomers to the roster, including Gallanza and Maglielle from the original game, alongside Fraux, Fediel, Beatrix, and Eustace. For a game where character feels matter as much as raw power, those additions are likely to be one of the expansion’s biggest draws.

Each character comes with their own combat role and playstyle, giving returning players more reasons to experiment with party composition and build direction. That is especially important in a game like Relink, where the appeal is not only in clearing encounters, but in finding the character rhythm that suits you best.

New bosses like The World and Beelzebub also help strengthen the MMO-inspired raid atmosphere. Even in preview form, it is clear that Endless Ragnarok is leaning further into that side of the experience. This is not just more content to clear. It is more material for players who enjoy learning patterns, refining builds, and pushing their teams against harder encounters.

Fukuhara and Hidaka also confirmed that the expansion remains fully enjoyable for both solo and multiplayer players. NPC companions have reportedly been further improved to remain competent even during difficult encounters, although human players will naturally still offer stronger damage coordination in cooperative play.

Fatebreaker and Master Traits Raise the End-Game Ceiling

For veteran players, the biggest test may be Fatebreaker, a brutal new difficulty tier designed to push Relink’s end-game further. During our preview session, Fatebreaker clearly felt tuned for highly optimised builds and experienced players.

The bosses themselves did not appear to gain dramatically new attack patterns, but the overall tuning was clearly aimed at extending the end-game progression curve. This feels less like a reinvention of boss behaviour and more like a new layer of pressure for players who already know how to build, dodge, burst, and coordinate properly.

That may not be what everyone is looking for. Players hoping for entirely new encounter structures may need to manage expectations. But for those who wanted a harder reason to keep refining their characters, Fatebreaker seems built exactly for that purpose.

Supporting this new challenge is Master Traits, a new progression system that pushes characters beyond their previous limits. Rather than simply increasing the level cap, Master Traits function as permanent upgrades unlocked through special resources. These can increase damage potential, improve healing efficiency, and enhance active skills.

It is a more interesting approach than a simple stat bump. By giving players another long-term progression layer, Endless Ragnarok creates more room for build refinement without flattening the experience into raw number chasing.

Summons Add a New Tactical Layer

One of the most refreshing additions in Endless Ragnarok is the new summon mechanic. Players can now equip monster summons that can be directly controlled during battle. These summons use a shared Gem resource system and provide offensive, defensive, or utility-focused advantages depending on the creature selected.

In play, summons change the rhythm of tougher encounters in an immediate way. Because they are invincible while active, they create windows where players can respond to danger more safely, extend pressure during damage phases, or use them strategically when a boss encounter becomes especially chaotic.

That invincibility could have easily felt overpowered, but the Gem system gives the mechanic a clear limit. In multiplayer, it becomes even more interesting thanks to a shared Gem reduction mechanic between party members. It is a clever balancing solution that encourages coordinated team play without letting summons dominate the entire combat flow.

The result is a system that feels powerful without feeling thoughtless. Used well, summons can turn difficult moments in your favour. Used carelessly, they still cost a valuable resource that the party may need later.

Lyria Finally Gets Her Big Combat Moment

Endless Ragnarok also gives Lyria a much larger role during combat encounters. She still does not actively fight alongside the party, but she can now contribute to Skybound Arts through a special mechanic called Primal Burst. When triggered successfully, Lyria summons Bahamut to unleash a devastating finishing blow.

During our preview session, this quickly became one of the expansion’s most satisfying spectacle moments. The timing of Bahamut’s finishing breath attacks consistently aligned with the final moments of boss encounters, creating cinematic conclusions that felt almost purpose-built for maximum impact.

It is a smart way to give Lyria more presence without fundamentally changing her role in the party. More importantly, it adds another layer of drama to the moments where Relink already feels most exciting. When the fight is nearly over, the party is pushing for the finish, and Bahamut comes crashing in, Endless Ragnarok knows exactly how to make that victory feel bigger.

After spending time with the preview build, it is difficult not to feel optimistic about Endless Ragnarok. Cygames is not fundamentally reinventing Granblue Fantasy: Relink, and that is probably the right decision. Instead, the expansion appears focused on amplifying what fans already loved. New characters, deeper progression systems, roguelike content, summons, tougher challenges, and more efficient farming all feed into the same core idea: give players more reasons to stay in the loop.

That is what makes Endless Ragnarok feel meaningful rather than merely additive. The best expansions do not just attach more content to an existing game. They understand what players were already doing, then make that experience richer, smoother, and more rewarding. For players who were already addicted to Relink’s end-game, Endless Ragnarok looks ready to pull them back in all over again.
