nopixel V Closed Beta Begins September 8
Few games demonstrate the longevity of Rockstar Games’ open-world design quite like Grand Theft Auto V. More than 13 years after its original release, the game has survived three console generations and sold more than 230 million copies worldwide. Yet one of its most enduring legacies was not originally created by Rockstar at all.
GTA roleplay communities transformed Los Santos into something closer to an improvisational life simulator, where players could become police officers, criminals, business owners, emergency workers or practically any other character they could invent.
NoPixel became one of the biggest names in that scene, particularly thanks to its popularity among Twitch and YouTube creators. Now, Rockstar and NoPixel are taking that relationship considerably further. Rockstar has confirmed that nopixel V will enter closed beta on September 8, with invited players accessing the experience directly through the Rockstar Games Launcher.
Rockstar Has Been Moving Closer to GTA Roleplay for Years
This is not a sudden change in Rockstar’s attitude towards the roleplay community. In 2023, the company brought Cfx.re, the team responsible for the FiveM and RedM frameworks, into Rockstar Games. At the time, Rockstar said the partnership would allow it to better support the creators and players building roleplay experiences around Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
NoPixel V is perhaps the clearest indication yet of where that investment can lead. Rockstar describes the project as the “next evolution” of GTA roleplay, while NoPixel says it has been created in collaboration with Rockstar Games. Access will initially remain invitation-only, rather than opening the server immediately to everyone.
nopixel V Rebuilds Parts of Los Santos
The changes extend well beyond new roleplaying systems. NoPixel has been substantially reworking the Grand Theft Auto V map, with refreshed areas, new locations, detailed interiors and graphical enhancements intended to make Los Santos feel more contemporary.
The project also promises more ways to travel by land, sea and air, alongside expanded character customisation designed to give players greater freedom when constructing their roleplay identities.
Locations such as Cypress Flats have received major alterations, continuing NoPixel’s tradition of changing familiar parts of Los Santos rather than simply using Rockstar’s original map untouched. All of that will sit underneath the elaborate jobs, businesses, criminal enterprises and social systems that helped turn GTA RP into a phenomenon in the first place.
The Closed Beta Is Still Invitation Only
The September 8 beta will not represent a full public launch. NoPixel is gradually revealing its invited roster, with hundreds of players already listed for access. The studio has not announced when everyone else will be able to join or how access will eventually work beyond the closed testing period.
That makes nopixel V an interesting milestone more than a finished destination. What began as players modifying Grand Theft Auto V into something Rockstar never intended has become significant enough for Rockstar to acquire the technology behind those communities and now to collaborate directly with one of its biggest names.
Meanwhile, Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has yet to reveal what its next-generation online play will look like. Our recent Extended Look breakdown covers everything currently confirmed about Jason, Lucia and Leonida. For now, though, Los Santos apparently still has plenty of life left in it.
