Horizon Hunters Gathering Reboot Reportedly Drops Live-Service Focus

Guerrilla Games is reportedly undertaking a major overhaul of Horizon Hunters Gathering, with PlayStation moving away from the live-service structure originally planned for the cooperative action game.

According to a new Bloomberg report, citing people familiar with the project, Guerrilla has been working on a reboot since June following poor feedback from private playtests. The current plan is reportedly to strip out the live-service component and reshape Horizon Hunters Gathering into a smaller, more traditional cooperative multiplayer game.

Originally Built Around Replayable Hunts

When Guerrilla officially announced the project in February, Horizon Hunters Gathering was presented as a three-player co-op action game for PlayStation 5 and PC. Its core experience revolved around repeatable hunts, including Machine Incursion missions against waves of machines and Cauldron Descent runs built around changing rooms and roguelite progression.

Players could choose from different Hunters, build their abilities and return to a social hub between missions. The game was also always intended to include a narrative campaign. Guerrilla previously said it would introduce new characters, mysteries and threats, with an ongoing story that would continue beyond launch.

Bloomberg’s report suggests that campaign will now sit within a considerably smaller game, rather than alongside the broader live-service ambitions originally envisioned.

Guerrilla Reportedly Has Until December to Show Progress

The project has not been cancelled, but its future is reportedly far from guaranteed. According to sources, Guerrilla staff were told that the team has until December to present its next major milestone and convince PlayStation executives that the reworked version is worth continuing.

Many developers currently working on Horizon Hunters Gathering are also expected to move on to another project, which will reportedly undergo its own internal evaluation before the end of the year.

That represents a significant change for a game Guerrilla had been actively playtesting throughout 2026. Its second closed test took place in May and introduced new Hunters, solo support through NPC teammates and additional story content.

The Next Mainline Horizon Is Reportedly Still Years Away

Bloomberg’s report also claims that only a small team is currently working on the next mainline Horizon game, with that project still several years away from completion. That could make the outcome of the Hunters Gathering reboot particularly important for Guerrilla, given how much of the studio has reportedly been focused on the multiplayer project.

Neither PlayStation nor Guerrilla has publicly commented on the reported overhaul. For now, Horizon Hunters Gathering remains officially announced for PlayStation 5 and PC with no release date. If the reboot goes ahead as reported, however, the final game could look considerably different from the ongoing multiplayer experience Guerrilla first unveiled earlier this year.
