Black Myth: Zhong Kui Gameplay Finally Shows the Action RPG in Motion
Game Science has released the first substantial gameplay footage for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, giving players 15 minutes of in-game action from the follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong. Previously shown primarily through cinematic and in-engine material, Black Myth: Zhong Kui can now be seen functioning as a full action RPG, complete with a visible interface, sword combat, defensive mechanics and several supernatural abilities.
The footage comes almost exactly a year after Game Science first unveiled the project, continuing the studio’s tradition of using August 20 to provide updates on its Black Myth games. Game Science notes that the footage comes from a work-in-progress build and may differ from the final game.
Sword Combat and Elemental Powers Define Zhong Kui’s Fighting Style
Zhong Kui appears considerably more sword-focused than the staff-wielding Destined One from Black Myth: Wukong. The gameplay shows fast combinations, evasive manoeuvres and frequent parries, with the choreography leaning heavily into wuxia-inspired swordplay. Attacking and successfully defending also appear to build resources that can then be spent on more powerful abilities.
Elemental effects provide another major part of his arsenal. Both fire and lightning can seemingly be channelled through Zhong Kui’s weapon, giving his regular attacks additional effects.
Lightning produces one of the trailer’s more dramatic moments, with the weather shifting during battle as rain begins falling around the combatants. Whether those environmental changes have mechanical consequences beyond the spectacle remains unclear.
A Mysterious Entity Can Fight Alongside Zhong Kui
One of the stranger mechanics appears during a boss battle, in which Zhong Kui is joined by a dark, sword-wielding figure. The entity can attack independently, drawing some attention away from Zhong Kui and creating openings against the boss. Later footage appears to show Zhong Kui merging with or taking control of the figure, changing his moveset and providing access to more aggressive attacks.
Exactly what this creature is, and how players gain access to it, has not been explained. The footage closes with a wider montage of Zhong Kui hunting supernatural creatures, including several enemies rooted heavily in Chinese mythology and folklore. His more recognisable traditional appearance also makes a brief showing towards the end.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui Still Has No Release Window
Despite finally showing the game in action, Game Science is not ready to put a date on Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The studio continues to describe it as a single-player action RPG inspired by the legendary Chinese ghost hunter Zhong Kui, with development still ongoing and no release window announced.
PC and mainstream console platforms are planned, although Game Science says final platform information will be confirmed closer to launch.
Still, going from last year’s cinematic introduction to 15 minutes of playable combat is a substantial step forward. Between its faster swordplay, supernatural abilities, and the mysterious entity fighting alongside Zhong Kui, the second Black Myth game is already beginning to establish an identity beyond simply following Wukong.
