Kirby and the World Beyond Opens up Kirby’s Next Adventure
Kirby has swallowed plenty of strange things over the years, but his next adventure is giving him a considerably larger playground to use those powers in. During the latest Nintendo Direct, Nintendo and HAL Laboratory revealed Kirby and the World Beyond, a brand-new 3D adventure launching exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 in Spring 2027.
Rather than moving through the more self-contained stages traditionally associated with the series, Kirby will be able to explore a world filled with different routes, challenges, and opportunities to experiment with his Copy Abilities. Those abilities remain central to the experience, but they are being expanded well beyond combat.
Copy Abilities Now Help Kirby Explore the World
Kirby can still inhale enemies and acquire their powers, but familiar Copy Abilities now provide dedicated movement options. The Cutter can be ridden across fields at high speed, while Kirby can stick his Sword into trees and use it to climb. Bomb explosions can even propel him high into the air, opening up locations that might otherwise be difficult to reach.
Nintendo says these enhanced abilities will allow players to “push boundaries” while exploring, suggesting that figuring out unconventional ways to move through each environment will be a major part of the adventure. That makes Kirby and the World Beyond feel like a natural extension of the more open 3D direction explored by Kirby and the Forgotten Land, while giving Kirby considerably more freedom over how he gets around.
King Dedede Has Captured a Mysterious Girl
The story introduces an unnamed girl possessing mysterious powers who has somehow fallen into King Dedede’s hands. Who she is remains unknown, though Nintendo is already teasing a possible connection between her and the unusual new power Kirby has acquired.
The trailer raises another much larger question. After Dedede is sent flying through a strange opening in the sky, Kirby follows and eventually encounters an enormous wall stretching across the unfamiliar world. Why the wall exists, what lies beyond it, and how the mysterious girl fits into everything remain unanswered for now.
That is a slightly more intriguing setup than simply locking Kirby inside another strange land, especially with the title itself placing so much emphasis on discovering what exists beyond.
Kirby and the World Beyond launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 in Spring 2027, coinciding with the series’ 35th anniversary. Nintendo has already confirmed additional anniversary merchandise and celebrations. For Kirby, turning 35 apparently means getting a much bigger world to eat his way through.
