Who would have thought that in 2026, after being dormant for so long, Capcom would finally revisit one of its biggest action game franchises—Onimusha? Powered by the latest iteration of the RE Engine, which promises stunning visuals, the newest entry, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, showcases a refined yet distinct gameplay style compared to its predecessors. One thing is certain: players looking for content will not be disappointed.
This was confirmed by the game’s director, Satoru Nihei, and producer, Akihiro Kadokawa, in a recent interview with Famitsu. They shared numerous details about what players can expect from the game, which will feature a protagonist modeled after the legendary actor Toshiro Mifune.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to follow a linear, stage-based progression structure akin to the older entries rather than adopting an open-world concept like many modern games. Besides the intense combat that fans anticipate, the game will also include a variety of puzzles designed to challenge players’ minds. Capcom estimates that completing the main story will take around 20 hours.

Swordplay remains a core element of the experience, but successfully executing a parry will not instantly kill enemies. Instead, parrying will grant a temporary damage buff to the player’s sword, making the risk of performing such maneuvers strategically rewarding as you slice and dice up those the Genma.
However, the developers have yet to make a final decision on whether the game will include difficulty settings. For now, they remain committed to delivering a balanced challenge — one that is neither too easy nor too difficult for the average player. What that would mean for players looking to truly test themselves is up for debate, but sticking to its original vision is a laudable move.
Capcom also believes that due to its brutal design, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will likely receive a CERO Z rating, Japan’s strictest classification, due to its depiction of extreme violence. The main character, Miyamoto Musashi, will spill significant blood and sever countless limbs throughout the game, which can be quite similar to Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. For players uncomfortable with such content, there will be an option to disable the gore effects.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released in 2026, though an exact date has yet to be announced. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
