SNK Establishes VS Studio SNK, Led by Katsuhiro Harada
SNK has announced the establishment of VS Studio SNK Co., Ltd., a newly founded game development studio headquartered in Tokyo and led by Katsuhiro Harada as Representative Director and CEO. The company says it will support the studio’s launch and plans to make it a consolidated subsidiary, with collaboration on game software development.
The announcement lands as a statement of intent for SNK’s wider development ambitions. No projects have been confirmed yet, but this is not a consultancy role or a loose partnership; it is a formal studio formation with Harada at the top, and with SNK explicitly framing it as a way to strengthen creative and development capabilities through collaboration.
“Beyond Tradition, Crafted to Perfection” as the Studio’s Core Pitch
Harada’s message is clear about what he wants VS Studio SNK to represent. He describes the studio philosophy as “Beyond tradition, crafted to perfection,” and frames the company as an answer to a long-running question he has carried as a developer: what kind of environment allows teams to do their best work.
Rather than selling a specific genre up front, Harada emphasises the studio as a “free, open, and spacious environment” designed to generate new ideas and deliver “memorable games” to players worldwide. The language is broad but deliberate, and suggests VS Studio SNK is being positioned as a long-term creative vehicle.
Harada also explicitly signals hiring intent, noting that VS Studio SNK is looking for new team members who share the studio’s vision. In other words, the formation announcement is also a recruitment flag planted in the ground.
Why the “VS” Name Is More Than a Fighting Game Nod
One of the more interesting details is the studio name itself. Harada explains that “VS” has multiple meanings, starting with its roots in the “Video game Soft (VS Development Division)” language from earlier in his career, then extending to the spirit of “Versus” as challenging tradition. He also lists other interpretations such as “Visionary Standard,” “Volition Shift,” and “Vanguard Spirit,” leaning into the idea of a studio built around innovation and challenge.
As a figure most closely associated with competitive fighting games and community culture, the name inevitably reads as a competitive signifier, but Harda is also trying to widen the lens so VS does not become a creative constraint. In practice, expectations will still follow him, but the branding gives him room to explore what “competitive” means beyond traditional formats.
SNK’s Perspective, and What Happens Next

SNK developer Yasuyuki Oda also provided a pointed note of enthusiasm, describing Harada as a long-time friend and “worthy rival,” and acknowledging that while “nothing has been decided yet,” he expects the collaboration to become “even more exciting than ever before.” It is a rare tone for a corporate announcement, more personal than polished, and it hints at a working relationship that predates the formation of VS Studio SNK.
For now, the immediate “what this means” for players is mostly directional. A new Harada-led studio under SNK is likely to raise expectations around competitive design discipline, community thinking, and long-tail support strategies.
