Mercurysteam Reveals New Fantasy Epic Blades of Fire, Launches in May

Some studios are more well-known for one genre than others, and when it comes to MercurySteam, even with the excellent Metroid Dread under its belt, many are more fond of the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series. Imagine the excitement when the studio, alongside 505 Games, just revealed its latest project, Blades of Fire, another action adventure already looking quite good for its May 22 release.

In a world dominated by the evil Queen Nerea, who has turned all steel to stone, players will step into the boots of Aran de Lira, the firstborn of the King’s Ward who can wield steel. Together with Adso, a young scholar with knowledge of lost myths and sacred tongues, the pair will go on a journey to discover their fate and save the world.

The key in Blades of Fire is working with steel, with weapons vital to the entire experience. The game features a unique weapons forging system that has near limitless variations. In total, there are seven different weapon families and over 30 Forge Scrolls. Players can combine countless alloys, hilts, runes, blades and pummelling edges to craft and perfect the ultimate evil-slaying weapon. And with over 50 distinct enemy types, the more options you have, the better.

Tactical combat comes in the form of attacking certain body parts, with slashing, stabbing, and bludgeoning all possible, depending on the situation and the equipment of your foes. Using the right approach and weapons is the only way to victory in Blades of Fire.

“MercurySteam’s pedigree for creating unique and beloved games is just one of the many reasons we’re thrilled to partner with them on Blades of Fire,” Neil Ralley, president of 505 Games, said. “Their gaming system that transforms weapons customisation into an outstanding combat experience is astounding, as is their commitment to telling the best story possible. We can’t wait to share it with the world.”

Blades of Fire will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on May 22.
