Astral Chain and Metal Gear Rising Directors Launch Eel Game Studio

Former PlatinumGames Leaders Launch Eel Game Studio

A group of former Platinum Games veterans has officially formed a new development studio, Eel Game Studio, based in Tokyo, Japan.

Platinum Games has long been regarded as one of the premier action game developers in the industry, known for high-intensity combat systems and stylish design. However, the studio has undergone significant internal changes in recent years, with several key creative figures departing following a broader leadership reshuffle.

Now, some of those veterans have resurfaced with a new venture.

A Compact Team With Big Action Credentials

Eel Game Studio currently consists of around 23 employees. While details about its debut project remain undisclosed, the studio has stated that its mission is to create deeply immersive entertainment experiences.

The founding lineup includes several prominent names in the action genre.

Takahisa Taura, director of Astral Chain and designer on NieR: Automata, joins as Director. Kenji Saito, known for directing Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, takes on the role of President. Katsumi Suenami, who served as Project Manager on Bayonetta 3, also joins as Director.

Together, the trio represents a significant concentration of experience in crafting fast-paced, mechanically demanding action titles.

A New Force in Japan’s Action Scene

It remains unclear whether the remainder of the team is composed primarily of former Platinum Games staff, particularly following the broader wave of departures that affected the studio in recent years.

Regardless, the formation of Eel Game Studio immediately positions it as one of the more intriguing new players in Japan’s action development landscape. With leadership rooted in some of the genre’s most respected modern titles, expectations will be high for whatever project the studio unveils next.

For now, all eyes will be on Eel Game Studio as it prepares to announce its first game.
