Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale Brings Southeast Asian Rhythm to 2027
Bandai Namco and Malaysian developer Metronomik have revealed Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale, a new rhythm and puzzle action-adventure coming in 2027. Players take control of Kaya, a young adventurer hoping to follow in the footsteps of her parents and become a certified Worldbuilder.
Doing so requires more than passing a written exam. Kaya must travel across the world, gathering its Giants before performing the Renewal Ritual, a ceremony capable of restoring the world’s fading flavours.
The journey takes place across Selera, a colourful fantasy setting inspired by the different cultures, music and traditions found throughout Southeast Asia.
Rhythm Shapes More Than the Soundtrack
Music is not simply background dressing in Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale. Players will need to follow the beat while exploring, solving puzzles and navigating different environments, with rhythm also influencing Kaya’s abilities during combat.
That should sound familiar to anyone who has followed Metronomik’s work. The Kuala Lumpur studio previously built No Straight Roads around musical combat, and its upcoming sequel recently appeared during the Southeast Asian Games Showcase.
Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale takes that musical foundation in a considerably different direction, leaning into puzzle-solving and exploration rather than rock rebellion.
Kaya’s Spoon and the Ondeh Powers Open New Paths
Kaya is armed with a trusty Spoon alongside the magical abilities of creatures known as the Ondeh. Different Ondeh grant unique powers that can be used to manipulate the environment, solve puzzles and deal with the eccentric creatures standing in Kaya’s way.
Exploration spans multiple regions with villages, hidden areas, and distinctive landscapes, each intended to reflect different elements of Southeast Asian culture.
Food also forms an important part of the wider theme, fitting naturally with Kaya’s mission to restore the flavours of the world.
Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale Physical Editions Are Coming to Southeast Asia
Players in Southeast Asia will also have access to physical PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 editions, although Bandai Namco has yet to announce pricing or a more specific release date.
For Metronomik, it is another opportunity to build a game around music while putting Southeast Asian influences right at the centre rather than leaving them as background inspiration. And this time, saving the world apparently starts by making sure it still tastes good.
Ondeh Ondeh Kaya’s Tasty Tale will launch digitally worldwide for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam in 2027.
