Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 3 Expands the Battlefield on PS5 and PC
Bandai Namco Entertainment has revealed Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 3, bringing its free-to-play team combat series back with cross-play, new tactical abilities and a roster that finally expands more substantially beyond the Universal Century.
Developed by Bandai Namco Forge Digitals, the sequel is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, with both versions operating together through cross-platform multiplayer. A release date has not yet been announced.
The announcement trailer shows the familiar mix of heavyweight Mobile Suit combat and on-foot infantry action returning, but Battle Operation 3 is also making several notable changes to how its battles work.
Gundam SEED Joins the Battle Operation 3 Roster
One of the biggest shifts concerns where its Mobile Suits come from. While previous Battle Operation games have leaned heavily on Universal Century machines, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED will be represented when Battle Operation 3 launches. Bandai Namco says another two to three Alternative Universe works are planned during its first year of service.
That includes mass-production Mobile Suits such as the BuCUE rather than limiting the roster to headline Gundams and signature machines. It gives Bandai Namco another very different Gundam project alongside GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, which launches March 5 with its own original After Apocalypse timeline.
SP Skills Give Every Mobile Suit Another Tactical Option
Team combat remains the centre of the experience, with players balancing long-range firepower, close-quarters attacks and the individual characteristics of their chosen Mobile Suit.
Every machine now gains an SP Skill, giving each unit another distinct ability capable of changing the flow of a fight. A new Battle Assist system is also intended to simplify some of the series’ more complicated inputs and make combos easier to execute.
Bandai Namco is also pushing the visual presentation further, with more detailed Mobile Suit models, environments and player avatars designed to make battles feel heavier and more grounded.
Infantry Combat Still Plays a Role Outside the Cockpit
Pilots will still have reasons to abandon several tonnes of armour and continue the fight on foot. Infantry can plant explosives at enemy bases, request support fire and secure strategic objectives, making the distinction between pilot and Mobile Suit an important part of each match rather than a cosmetic extra.
Base Camp also returns as the social space between sorties, giving players somewhere to meet other mercenaries before heading back into battle. The series’ slower, tactical approach contrasts sharply with the much faster combat being built around GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT and its three-player endgame, giving Gundam fans two very different ways to get behind the controls of a Mobile Suit.
Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 3 is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam as a free-to-play release with optional paid content. Up to 18 players are supported, while Bandai Namco has yet to confirm a launch window.
