Twisted Metal Director Tapped to Helm Street Fighter Movie Adaptation

Competing to cash in on the film and series market, many video game adaptation projects are currently in the works. Capcom is among the IP owners which are actively exploiting this market potential. In addition to planning another Resident Evil film reboot, they are also bringing the Street Fighter universe back to the big screen, with this project now one step closer to reality.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Street Fighter film adaptation has finally found its most crucial puzzle piece — the director. The movie will be helmed by Kitao Sakurai, best known as a producer for The Eric Andre Show and the director of several episodes of the Twisted Metal series.

Capcom will also be taking an active role in the process alongside Legendary Entertainment, which will co-produce and co-develop the film.

At this point, there is no information yet regarding the story direction or which actors and actresses will be cast to portray its iconic characters. However, with years and years of material and a large roster to pick from, chances are, fans are going to be satisfied in one way or another.

This is, of course, not the first time Street Fighter has made its way to the big screen. The first foray was the 1994 movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia, followed by Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li in 2009, with Kristin Kreuk as the star. Unfortunately, both films failed commercially and critically. Since then, the former has become a cult hit among fans.

The games have definitely fared better, starting from the 1987 arcade game until the current iteration of Street Fighter 6, which recently welcomed another addition in the form of Mai Shiranui. Each release is always highly anticipated, and is a staple of the fighting game community.

The Street Fighter adaptation film is scheduled for release on March 20, 2026.
