Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Gameplay Makes Its Gamescom Debut
Winter is coming, but this time you get to decide who actually wins. PlaySide Studios debuted the first proper gameplay for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros during Gamescom Opening Night Live, offering a much clearer look at how the HBO series is being transformed into a real-time strategy game.
Coming to PC in early 2027, the game puts players in command of House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen or the White Walkers as they attempt to conquer the Seven Kingdoms and claim the Iron Throne. It was one of the many games appearing during the showcase, all of which can be found in our Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 roundup.
Familiar Game of Thrones Heroes Take to the Battlefield
The new trailer brings plenty of familiar faces into battle. Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Jaime and Tywin Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and the Night King are all playable heroes, alongside considerably furrier allies such as Ghost and Grey Wind.
Each brings unique abilities capable of changing the course of a battle, but PlaySide is not turning War for Westeros into a simple collection of hero units.
Players still need to manage the foundations of a traditional RTS, gathering resources, constructing buildings, training armies and expanding their territory while responding to whatever their opponents are doing.
Every Faction Plays Differently in War for Westeros
The four factions are being designed around asymmetric strategies rather than simply swapping one army’s appearance for another. Each has its own units, buildings, mechanics, and broader playstyle based on its identity in Game of Thrones.
That could mean approaching a battle very differently depending on whether you are leading the armies of the Great Houses or sending the Night King’s forces south. More importantly, players are not bound by how events unfolded in the television series.
War for Westeros is built around creating alternate outcomes, giving players the opportunity to change alliances, win battles that were previously lost, and ultimately decide who controls the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Beta Is Coming
PlaySide Studios also confirmed that a beta is planned ahead of launch. Details on timing, availability, and how players can participate will be revealed later this year, giving RTS fans their first opportunity to experience the competing factions firsthand outside a curated trailer.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is currently planned for PC via Steam in early 2027.
