Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake Rebuilds a Strategy Classic

Another beloved strategy game is returning, with Ubisoft officially revealing Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake during Gamescom Opening Night Live. Launching in 2027, the remake revisits the acclaimed 1999 turn-based strategy game while preserving its mixture of exploration, RPG-style hero progression and tactical grid combat.

It was among the many new announcements packed into the showcase, all of which can be found in our Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 roundup. Ubisoft studios in Chengdu and Shanghai are leading development, with additional support from teams in Paris and Montpellier.

Erathia Returns as a Fully 3D World

The most immediate change is visual. Rather than retaining the original game’s fixed 2D isometric presentation, Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake is being rebuilt from scratch using Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine.

Erathia is now rendered as a fully 3D world with free camera movement, 4K visuals, dynamic lighting, changing weather and shifting seasons. Ubisoft is also modernising animations and audio while introducing new cinematics throughout the campaign.

The underlying strategy remains much more familiar. Players will explore maps, collect resources and artefacts, develop towns and build armies before taking those forces into turn-based battles. Quality-of-life improvements and additional planning tools are being introduced to make those systems easier to navigate without dramatically changing the original formula.

Both Heroes of Might and Magic III Expansions Are Included

Ubisoft is treating the Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake as a complete recreation of the Heroes of Might and Magic III experience rather than only rebuilding its original campaign. Content from both Armageddon’s Blade and The Shadow of Death will be included, alongside all nine factions and the original campaigns.

Queen Catherine’s efforts to restore Erathia remain at the heart of the story, but the campaigns are being joined into a more continuous experience. A new introductory prologue and fully produced cinematic sequences will help connect everything together.

Multiplayer is also returning, supporting up to eight players online with improved matchmaking and simultaneous turns. The fan-favourite local Hot Seat mode is staying as well.

Decades of Community Maps Will Still Work

Perhaps the most interesting decision concerns Heroes III‘s enormous legacy within the community. Ubisoft says the remake will retain compatibility with thousands of maps and campaigns created by players over the past 25 years, meaning longtime fans will not necessarily have to leave their favourite community content behind.

Updated editing tools will let players build new maps and campaigns, while an in-game UGC hub will make community creations easier to discover and download.

Ubisoft also used the announcement to bring the original Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete to Steam for the first time. The release includes the 1999 game, along with Armageddon’s Blade and The Shadow of Death.

Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake launches in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Ubisoft Connect, Steam and the Epic Games Store. It will also be available through Ubisoft+.
