Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Brings Capcom’s Dark Fantasy Action Series Back This September

Capcom has finally put a date on one of its most anticipated legacy revivals. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on September 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The release date was confirmed during the latest State of Play, where Capcom also showed a new trailer focusing on Musashi, Mount Oe, Shuten Doji, and several newly detailed combat systems. For longtime fans, it is the clearest sign yet that Onimusha is no longer just a nostalgic name from Capcom’s past.

While Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter have continued to carry Capcom’s modern catalogue, Onimusha: Way of the Sword represents a more deliberate return to sword driven dark fantasy action.

Musashi Faces Shuten Doji At Mount Oe

The new Onimusha: Way Of The Sword trailer places Miyamoto Musashi at Mount Oe, a Kyoto location tied closely to history and Japanese folklore. The area has been taken over by a powerful Genma who claims to be Shuten Doji, the legendary Oni feared across Japanese myth.

Onimusha has always worked best when it blends historical figures, supernatural threats, and dramatic swordplay, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword appears to be leaning fully into that identity.

The trailer also gives players a better look at how Capcom is handling Musashi as the game’s protagonist. Rather than presenting him only as a wandering swordsman, The game frames his journey around the Oni Gauntlet, the power it grants, and the larger conflict consuming early Edo period Kyoto.

Reflex Combo And Oni Powers Deepen Combat

Capcom also revealed more about the game’s combat systems, with Reflex Combo standing out as one of the more important additions in Onimusha: Way Of The Sword.

By continuously dodging enemy attacks, players can fill the Reflex Dodge gauge. Once full, Musashi can unleash a powerful Reflex Combo, turning well timed evasion into an aggressive counterattack. That gives the system a more active rhythm, rewarding players who stay close to danger without simply waiting behind defence.

Oni powers will also shape both combat and exploration. Oni Strength lets Musashi break through enemy defences with heavier force, while Oni Agility gives him explosive movement options, including the ability to run across certain walls to reach new areas.

The Demo Gives Players An Early Taste Of Swordplay

Capcom has also released a playable demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The demo covers around 30 minutes from the early story, placing players in the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage and introducing key mechanics such as Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni Armament, and soul absorption.

Demo progress will not carry over into the full game. However, players who keep their demo save data will be able to claim the Charm: Kubi Akari in the full release, granting Musashi a useful in game effect.

That early hands on access should help Capcom set expectations. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is not simply banking on the name, it needs to prove that the series’ distinctive rhythm of sword clashes, supernatural power, and tense enemy encounters can still feel sharp in a modern action market.

Pre-Orders And Editions Are Now Live

Pre-orders are now available, with standard pre-order bonuses including the Charm: Lion Dog and Sword Appearance: Sealed Curse.

Capcom is also offering Deluxe and Premium Deluxe editions. The Deluxe Edition includes the base game and a Deluxe Kit with additional charms, an outfit, and appearance skins, while the Premium Deluxe Edition adds ally outfits, more skins, and an in game digital soundtrack.

For players who have waited years to see Onimusha return, the September 25 date finally makes the revival feel real. Capcom has spent recent years proving it can modernise its biggest franchises. Onimusha: Way of the Sword now has the chance to show whether one of its most beloved dormant series can cut through again.
