Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV Brings Back The Last Stand

Surviving 20 escalating waves of Warhammer 40,000 enemies was never particularly relaxing, but KING Art Games is giving players considerably more tactical firepower for the next round. Deep Silver has revealed how The Last Stand will return in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV, with the familiar three-player co-operative survival mode receiving a substantial expansion through new Strikeforces, deeper progression and five Commanders available at launch.

The mode was previously outlined in the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV overview, but the new 30-minute Battlefield Report provides the most detailed look yet at how its survive, upgrade and repeat structure has evolved. Players can see the new systems in action through the full The Last Stand Battlefield Report, where members of KING Art Games take on the increasingly dangerous waves themselves.

Strikeforces Give Every Commander Some Backup

The basic objective remains familiar. Three players each control a powerful Commander and attempt to survive 20 increasingly difficult waves, collecting upgrades and adapting their builds as the pressure rises. Each Commander can reach 30 levels during a run, unlocking skills and equipment that expand their combat options. Players will also need to maintain control of important battlefield positions while grabbing health supplies between waves.

The biggest addition is the new Strikeforce system. Rather than fighting alone, every Commander can now bring up to four Companion units into battle. Those units have their own specialisations and progression options, allowing players to build combinations around both their Commander’s strengths and the supporting force around them.

That additional layer fits with the broader emphasis on faction identity already shown through earlier multiplayer Battlefield Reports, where the Space Marines, Orks, Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus each approached battlefield control very differently.

Five Commanders Will Be Available at Launch

The Last Stand will initially feature five Commanders representing all four playable factions, including characters from both the Blood Ravens and Dark Angels Space Marine Chapters. KING Art Games has not yet revealed the full line-up in the announcement, although more Commanders are already planned as free post-launch DLC.

That should gradually add more combinations for three-player teams, particularly once additional Commanders interact with the expanded Strikeforce system.

The mode joins a sizeable launch package that already includes four campaigns, more than 70 campaign missions, Skirmish and competitive multiplayer. The series’ return was first outlined when Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV was revealed at Gamescom 2025.

Dawn of War IV Launches December 3

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV launches on PC via Steam on December 3, after a short delay from its previous September release date. Commander Edition owners can deploy from November 30 through a three-day early unlock.

KING Art Games is also planning substantial Year One support. Free updates will include the return of Crusade Mode, additional maps, modes, Commanders and a Mission Editor, while two larger story expansions will continue the conflict on Kronus and eventually introduce another playable faction.

The Last Stand may return from earlier entries, but the new Strikeforces suggest KING Art Games isn’t content to bring the old mode back unchanged. Surviving those 20 waves now requires managing considerably more than a single hero.
