EA Classic Games Return to Steam With Seven Restored Anniversary Editions
A room filled with almost 20,000 pieces of ageing physical media has helped Electronic Arts bring some of its oldest PC games back from the vault. EA has released 25 classic titles on Steam, including newly restored Anniversary Editions of Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition and six Wing Commander games. The wider collection also brings Theme Hospital, Crusader, Ultima and several other catalogue titles to Steam for the first time.
The publisher’s official EA Classics announcement says seven games have received more substantial restoration work, while the remaining 18 are faithful modern PC releases. It follows a wider resurgence in publishers revisiting older games, from Resonance of Fate receiving another enhanced PC remaster to Final Fantasy Tactics returning with separate Classic and Enhanced modes.
Lost Master Tapes Restore More Than 1,500 Cinematic Scenes
The Anniversary Editions grew out of an archival discovery at the company’s Redwood Shores campus in 2022. Senior Producer Jim Vessella and a small team uncovered a physical media vault containing nearly 20,000 archival assets, including Betacam, VHS and D1 tapes.
EA says it digitised roughly 2,500 hours of material, eventually recovering previously lost master FMV sequences and rebuilding more than 1,500 cinematic scenes across the seven Anniversary Editions. The approach sits closer to preservation than a conventional visual remake. EA says it has retained the original presentation and design while improving compatibility, controls and performance for current hardware.
Wing Commander Community Mods Become Official Features
The Wing Commander restorations go a step further by incorporating work created by the games’ community. Patches such as Wcdx, WCAT and various Enhancement Patches have been folded into the official releases, bringing features including gameplay speed fixes, improved controller support, higher-resolution FMVs, widescreen options and smoother frame rates.
Anyone who already owns the relevant Wing Commander games digitally through GOG or the EA App will receive the corresponding Anniversary Edition upgrade free on that platform.
GOG is also directly involved in parts of the preservation effort, including the restoration of Wing Commander Prophecy: 30th Anniversary Edition, with its Preservation Program continuing to maintain compatibility for classic PC releases.
Ultima, Theme Hospital and Crusader Join the Collection

Beyond the seven Anniversary Editions, EA’s 18 returning classics include Wing Commander: Privateer, Wing Commander: Academy, Wing Commander: Armada, Strike Commander, Theme Hospital, Crusader: No Remorse, Crusader: No Regret, nine mainline Ultima releases and both Ultima Underworld games.
The Anniversary Editions normally cost US$9.99 each, while the remaining classic releases cost US$4.99 each. Special pricing is available through Steam and GOG from November 5 to 19.
For a publisher with decades of PC history, the more encouraging part isn’t simply that another catalogue has reached Steam. EA has returned to original source material, incorporated decades of community work, and made games that helped define PC gaming substantially easier to access again.
