Fumito Ueda gen ATLAS Reveal Comes With a Bittersweet Bluepoint Reflection
Fumito Ueda is finally back in the spotlight with gen ATLAS, but the creator’s latest media tour has also brought up an older PlayStation dream.
Best known for ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, Ueda returned during Summer Game Fest with a clearer look at gen ATLAS, his next game with genDESIGN and Epic Games. The project immediately stood out for its vast landscapes, lonely atmosphere, and stronger science fiction identity, including a giant robot companion that appears central to both traversal and combat.
Yet while talking about his new game, Ueda also addressed the closure of Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the 2018 Shadow of the Colossus remake.
Ueda Says Bluepoint’s Closure Was Sad to Hear
In an interview with IGN, Ueda said he was saddened to learn that Bluepoint Games was no longer around. According to Ueda, he learned of the closure around the same time as the public, as he was not actively working with the studio when the news emerged.
Bluepoint Games built a strong reputation through technically impressive remakes and remasters, with Shadow of the Colossus standing among its most respected projects. For many players, that remake remains one of the clearest examples of how to modernise a classic without losing its emotional shape.
ICO Was the Remake Ueda Wanted
Ueda’s connection to Bluepoint makes his next comment especially interesting. When asked which of his older games he would like to see remade, Ueda pointed to ICO. That answer makes sense. While Shadow of the Colossus received both an HD remaster and a full PlayStation 4 remake, ICO has never returned in the same way.
The PlayStation 2 classic remains one of Ueda’s most important works, built around minimal dialogue, companionship, lonely spaces, and quiet puzzle solving. A modern remake from Bluepoint would likely have sparked huge interest among fans who still view ICO as one of PlayStation’s most distinctive early classics.
For now, that possibility feels far less likely. Ueda said he had hoped there might be another chance to work with Bluepoint in the future, which makes the studio’s closure hit harder for fans of both teams.
gen ATLAS Moves Ueda Beyond PlayStation
The Bluepoint discussion arrives just as Ueda is entering a new phase of his career. gen ATLAS is currently planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store. That makes it Ueda’s first major project not tied exclusively to PlayStation platforms, following decades of association with Sony hardware.
The game still carries plenty of familiar Ueda DNA. A small, vulnerable figure moves through an enormous world, silence and scale do much of the emotional work, and a strange companion appears to reshape how players interact with the environment.
At the same time, gen ATLAS looks more mechanical and action-driven than his earlier games. Ueda has said the shooting elements do not make it a traditional shooter, suggesting that combat will be one tool among many rather than the whole identity of the experience.
No Release Date
genDESIGN and Epic Games Publishing have not announced a release date for gen ATLAS.
That means fans may still have a long wait ahead, which is hardly unfamiliar territory for Ueda’s work. ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian all built their reputations around patience, atmosphere, and ideas that did not always fit neatly into mainstream design expectations.
gen ATLAS appears to be continuing that tradition, even as it heads to more platforms than any previous Ueda project. The future of ICO is less certain. After Ueda’s comments, the idea of a Bluepoint remake now feels like one of those missed industry possibilities fans will keep talking about for years.
