The Blood of Dawnwalker Story Mode Gets Even Easier in October

Rebel Wolves is preparing the first major post-launch update for The Blood of Dawnwalker, with a new difficulty option aimed squarely at players who would rather focus on Coen’s story than its combat.

The RPG has enjoyed a strong debut, selling more than one million copies within three days, but Rebel Wolves is already looking at ways to make the experience more approachable.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Game Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz confirmed that the update is currently planned for early October and will introduce a fifth difficulty level. Rather than pushing experienced players even harder, this one goes in the opposite direction.

A New Story Mode Sits Below the Current Easiest Difficulty

The new option will become The Blood of Dawnwalker’s easiest setting and take over the Story name. The existing Story difficulty will remain in the game but move one step up the ladder under a different name. Tomaszkiewicz floated “Demanding” as one possibility during the interview, although Rebel Wolves has not finalised the new name yet.

That will leave the game with five difficulty settings: Story, the renamed version of the current Story Mode, Fair, Challenging and Duelist. According to Tomaszkiewicz, the new Story setting is intended for players who have little interest in overcoming the combat itself and primarily want to experience the narrative.

Rebel Wolves has not detailed exactly which values will change, so it remains unclear how heavily enemies, damage or other combat systems will be adjusted.

Combat Targeting and Escaping Fights Are Also Changing

Accessibility is only part of the upcoming patch for The Blood of Dawnwalker. Rebel Wolves is also revisiting several areas of combat based on player feedback, including how targeting behaves after Coen stuns an enemy.

At present, the game can automatically switch targets following a stun, a deliberate design choice intended to prevent players from immediately striking the stunned opponent and breaking the effect. Tomaszkiewicz acknowledged that players have found the behaviour frustrating, and the studio is now changing how it works.

Escaping unwanted fights should also become easier, while performance optimisations and other improvements are planned for the same update. Tomaszkiewicz described it as a sizeable patch, although Rebel Wolves has yet to publish the complete list of changes or provide an exact release date.

For players mainly interested in Coen’s journey through Vale Sangora, though, the new Story Mode should remove another barrier when the update arrives in early October.
