007 First Light Sequel Questions Grow After IO Interactive’s Record Launch
IO Interactive has every reason to celebrate 007 First Light. The studio’s first James Bond game has reportedly sold 1.5 million copies within its first 24 hours, making it the fastest-selling release in the studio’s history.
That is a major achievement for the Danish developer. Before launch, there were fair questions around whether the studio best known for Hitman could successfully build a broader action-adventure around James Bond. Hitman’s strengths have always been patience, planning, improvisation, and precision. Bond demands all of that, as well as spectacle, momentum, cinematic action, and a very different kind of power fantasy.
007 First Light appears to have answered those doubts convincingly. Strong critical reception, positive player response, and a record-setting commercial start have turned the game into one of IO Interactive’s biggest success stories.
The complication is that this success may not automatically lead IO to steer the next Bond game.
Amazon Games Now Holds The Bigger Bond Question
The future of James Bond in games is tied more closely to Amazon and MGM. In a recent interview with Polygon, Amazon Games’ GM of gaming, Jeff Gattis, clarified that future Bond games would be handled by MGM and, in theory, Amazon Game Studios. IO Interactive was able to publish this game independently under an earlier agreement, before Amazon’s position around the wider Bond franchise shifted.
This does not mean IO is definitely finished with the IP. It does, however, mean the studio’s involvement in any sequel is not guaranteed by the success of its latest game. Any continuation would therefore depend on how Amazon, MGM, and IO choose to move forward.

IO Has Made A Strong Case For Returning
From the outside, IO has made a convincing case for why it should remain involved. 007 First Light gave the studio a chance to prove it could move beyond Hitman while still using its strengths. The result was not simply a reskinned stealth game, but a Bond origin story with action, espionage, set pieces, character work, and enough flexibility to feel connected to the studio’s design DNA.
That commercial start also gives Amazon little reason to dismiss the partnership lightly. Selling 1.5 million copies in 24 hours is not a minor success, especially for a franchise that had been absent from modern gaming for years.
James Bond’s Gaming Future Is Wide Open Again
Amazon could continue working with IO and build directly on the foundation that has already proven successful. It could also bring future games closer under its own publishing structure, collaborate with different studios, or take a more controlled approach to how Bond appears across games, film, and television.
For IO Interactive, 007 First Light remains a major win regardless of what happens next. The studio proved it could handle one of entertainment’s most recognisable characters and turn that challenge into a record launch. For players, though, the waiting game begins again.
