Mighty Cuphead Adventure Leads Studio MDHR’s Summer Game Fest Surprise

Studio MDHR had two major Cuphead announcements ready for Summer Game Fest, confirming that a brand new hand-animated Cuphead game has now entered development while also revealing a separate retro-inspired project titled Mighty Cuphead Adventure.

The newly confirmed Cuphead game is still in its earliest stages, so Studio MDHR is not sharing major details just yet. What it has confirmed is that the project will take Cuphead and the studio’s beloved cast into a fresh adventure, continuing the studio’s commitment to handcrafted animation and vintage-inspired game design.

A New Cuphead Game Is Now in Development

Studio MDHR co-founder Chad Moldenhauer said, “craftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do here at Studio MDHR,” tying the announcement back to the studio’s long-running focus on classic techniques and visual detail.

The original game stood out not only because of its demanding boss fights but also because of how fully it committed to 1930s cartoon animation, jazz-age energy, and painstaking traditional presentation.

The next Cuphead game is clearly some way off, but even a confirmation of development is likely to spark interest. Since Cuphead launched in 2017, the franchise has expanded through The Delicious Last Course, ports to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, a Netflix animated series, and a wide range of consumer products.

Mighty Cuphead Adventure Goes Fully Retro

The more immediate surprise is Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit action platformer being developed by a small team within Studio MDHR. Rather than simply borrowing the look of 1980s games, the studio says the project is built using technology from that era.

Mighty Cuphead Adventure is programmed in classic Assembly Language and designed around the specifications of the Sega Master System. That makes the project more than a modern nostalgia exercise, as Studio MDHR is treating it as a genuine retro hardware experiment, built to feel authentic at the technical level.

The game will still be compatible with modern consoles and PC, but the most unusual detail is its physical cartridge release for the Sega Master System. For retro collectors and long-time platforming fans, that could make Mighty Cuphead Adventure one of the stranger and more charming announcements from this year’s Summer Game Fest.

Studio MDHR Keeps Cuphead’s Handmade Identity Intact

Studio MDHR introduced the news through a Special Bulletin created with Toronto’s Stop Motion Department and Continue Agency, leaning into the same love of period-specific presentation that has defined Cuphead from the beginning.

More details on Mighty Cuphead Adventure will be shared in the months ahead. For now, Studio MDHR has managed to turn one Cuphead update into two different kinds of excitement, one pointing toward the franchise’s future and the other sending it deep into gaming’s past.
