Physint Engine Remains Undecided as Kojima Explores Xbox Technology

The move of Physint from PlayStation to Xbox has raised plenty of questions about Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game, including what technology will ultimately power it. Kojima Productions previously worked closely with Guerrilla Games and Sony on the Decima Engine for Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2, with the studios sharing technology and contributing to its continued development.

With Xbox now publishing Physint, attention has naturally turned towards whether Kojima Productions will stick with familiar technology or move in another direction. For now, even Kojima does not have the answer.

Speaking in a recent IGN interview, Kojima said the team has yet to settle on an engine, with the project still going through experimentation before that decision is made.

Kojima Wants to Make Use of Xbox Technology

What has changed is the technology and support now available through Xbox. Kojima said he wants to take advantage of as much Xbox technology as possible while developing Physint, although that does not mean the game has already committed to a particular engine.

The distinction matters, especially given Kojima Productions’ history with Decima. Rather than immediately replacing one technology stack with another, the studio appears to be evaluating what best suits the project before locking anything down.

That experimentation is happening while other parts of Physint are becoming clearer. Bill Skarsgård will play the game’s currently unnamed protagonist, joining Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe in the cast.

A PlayStation Release Would Be Xbox’s Decision

Kojima also addressed whether Physint could eventually appear on PlayStation despite Xbox now serving as publisher. According to Kojima, that decision will ultimately sit with Xbox.

That leaves the game’s eventual platform line-up open for now. Xbox has increasingly released its games across multiple platforms, but there is currently no confirmation that Physint will follow the same path.

The project itself also remains some way from release, with Kojima Productions continuing development alongside OD, its separate horror project with Xbox.

Kojima Says His Relationship With Sony Remains Strong

Despite the change in publishing partner, Kojima made it clear that his relationship with Sony has not disappeared. He previously revealed that Sony ended its involvement with Physint through a Zoom call, but has continued to speak positively about the company while acknowledging the wider pressures currently affecting the games industry.

For now, though, one of the biggest technical questions surrounding Physint remains unanswered. Kojima Productions has Xbox’s technology at its disposal, years of experience working with Decima behind it, and plenty of experimentation still ahead before deciding what ultimately powers the game
